Science Gallery Bengaluru, A complete guide

Science Gallery Bengaluru/SGB comes under the not-for-profit public organization. The work of the SGB organization is related to research-based activities. It is started primarily for young adults. The organization is considered the hub of human, nature, and social sciences, engineering, art, and design. SGB’s motto, Science Culture Experiment, reflects its unique approach.

The institution’s public engagement model highlights active participation, encouraging proactive involvement through dynamic research festivals. These festivals feature interdisciplinary exhibitions, programs, and events that integrate research-led initiatives led by artists and scholars from various disciplines.

SGB was founded with the basic support of the Govt of Karnataka and 3 prominent academic partners: the Indian Institute of Science, the National Centre for Biological Sciences, and the Srishti Institute of Art, Design, and Technology. The purpose of SGB is to ‘bring science back into culture’ using the following process.

  • Empowering Young Adults: Our Mentorship Initiative fosters self-driven, hands-on learning in a non-evaluative environment. We offer exposure to research practices, nurturing the next generation of research pioneers and active citizens.
  • Shaping Culture: Through our Public Engagement and Community Initiatives, we aim to cultivate a society that values the rigor of science, asks insightful questions, and engages in well-informed public debates.
  • Open Research: Set to launch in 2024, our Public Lab Complex supports open-ended experiments and collaborations between young adults and experts. By providing access to research tools and outcomes beyond institutional settings, we promote antidisciplinary thinking and intergenerational co-creation.

Anthropocene

Science Gallery Bengaluru is creating a long-term public engagement program to examine the cultural, socio-economic, and scientific impacts of the Anthropocene.

In this new epoch, humans have emerged as a force of nature, leaving a lasting imprint on the Earth’s geological layers. Through its research and public engagement initiatives, the organization aims to foster discussions about the planet’s present and future within the context of the Anthropocene.

Phytopia

This is the Science Gallery Bengaluru’s first fully online exhibition on plants named PHYTOPIA. The period of exhibition was from 21 Aug 2020 to 30 Aug 2020. Plants play an essential role in our lives—not only as the source of the air we breathe and the food we consume but also by enriching our existence in countless ways.

PHYTOPIA featured 14 interdisciplinary exhibits, 10 talks and events, 2 films, and 5 workshops, all designed to uncover the fascinating depths of plant life. This exhibition was selected through an international open call. It is complemented by programming that brings together creative persons from diverse fields in one place. There were discussions, talks, and workshops. The visitors were engaged in meaningful exploration.

The exhibition aligned with the United Nations General Assembly’s International Year of Plant Health initiative, emphasizing the importance of plant well-being globally.

Submerge

When we think about water, our focus is often on the mere 3% of Earth’s freshwater. But what happens when we consider water beyond its role as a resource? Water is, after all, a truly peculiar substance, found in the tiniest living cells as well as vast glaciers and immense oceans.

Past Exhibitions

Carbon

CARBON, our inaugural exhibition season in the building, challenged our understanding of our relationship with carbon. This is the fundamental element that is considered the building block of all life and everything around us. Such as from medicine to machinery and even architecture /art is made of carbon. Carbon’s presence is woven into nearly everything humanity has created, leaving its sooty mark on our world. Yet, it embodies a paradox: essential for life, yet capable of threatening it. CARBON delved into these complex and contradictory themes.

Psyche

PSYCHE was the second fully digital exhibition season. It is related to the mind, the brain, and the intricacies of thought and emotion. Featuring ten interactive exhibits, it examined topics such as mental health, artificial intelligence, social barriers to mental well-being, and more.

The season also included over 90 programs, offering a rich exploration of the human psyche through lectures, performances, workshops, and film discussions. With PSYCHE, the organization aimed to offer visitors fresh, dynamic, and diverse opportunities to engage with the complexities of the mind.

Contagion

CONTAGION was created as an interactive platform, particularly for younger audiences, to explore how diseases, behaviors, and emotions spread. The platform featured sixteen engaging exhibits and offered a range of connected lectures, tutorials, workshops, masterclasses, events, and films, providing visitors with various ways to understand the concept of contagion.

The exhibition offered a sense of hope by highlighting that pandemics have occurred in the past, suggesting that, together, we possess the resources to tackle the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, CONTAGION was chosen as the Falling Walls Winner in the Science Engagement category.

Elements

The idea that our world consists not just of matter, but of specific types of matter, is an ancient one. Elements possess distinct properties, traits, and even personalities. They have been shaped, exchanged, exploded, created, destroyed, and even revered. In the quest to understand these elements, numerous efforts have been made to control them, with the most successful being the creation of the Periodic Table.
